Happy New Year! Can you believe it is 2016?! Sounds so futuristic. I can't believe another holiday season has come and gone. I got all sorts of goodies for Christmas! All new pots and pans, some cookbooks, a slow cooker...some life-changing (at least in the kitchen) stuff. Hope Santa was just as nice to all of you!
I'm always reminded when my family gets together of how much I love deviled eggs. My Poppop makes them every holiday/birthday/graduation/whatever reason for a gathering and I'm pretty sure those (and my Grandma's scrambled eggs) are where my love for eggs started. He usually tops his with classic black olives, green olives with pimento, dill, and/or paprika. Given my taste for briny foods, my version includes kalamata olives and capers. When I'm looking for a healthy snack, especially one I can easily bring to work, I nearly always turn to hummus. I don't need to tell you all the different things you can do with hummus - you already know. But I do want to convince you that making your own is infinitely better than buying a prepackaged version at the grocery store.
Don't get me wrong - there are some great pre-made hummus' out there. But when you could have a more delicious, healthy, clean version that happens to work out costing you less money to have it why would you go for the other stuff? Okay...so I know Thanksgiving is just a few days away. I should be posting something to be served on the big day, right? Well hear me out. For me, Thanksgiving is about tradition. I have the same menu every year and look forward to knowing exactly what to expect on the table (or in my case, on our spiral staircase that we use as a tiered serving table in my tiny Brooklyn apartment). I know tradition isn't for everyone, but when it comes to Thanksgiving it is for me!
So my favorite part is before and after. Before for the Thanksgiving themed potlucks, work parties, etc when you aren't necessarily making a huge feast. After for, well, the LEFTOVERS! Before and after give me way more wiggle room for creativity. I love it. Ever since I was a child, crispy rice squares have been one of my favorite treats. Their crispy yet gooey texture with buttery marshmallow flavor just speaks to me on a hugely comforting level. Whether they were homemade or store bought I could never get enough of them when I was growing up!
Now that I'm older, I won't discriminate against store bought. After all, there are some pretty good ones out there (I'm looking at you, marshmallow dream bars from Starbucks). But homemade crispy rice squares are just so superior. Not to mention, they're a blank canvas to flavor however you like! Man, October has been an insanely busy month for me! So much excitement and catching up with old friends. Unfortunately it hasn't given me much time to cook, let alone blog. But luckily it has given me lots of time to come up with new ideas for dishes you'll love! And I finally have the time to share with you once more.
Like this morning - not only did I use leftovers from dinner yesterday (which I love to do) but it created an amazing fall morning meal. It's easy enough to do on a weekday before work or school and indulgent enough to want on the weekend. |
